In front of a fired-up Suncorp Stadium, the Dolphins put on a dominant display to defeat the defending premiers 30-12, with the night marking a special milestone for the young halfback Isaiya Katoa, playing his 50th NRL game.
At only 21 years of age, Katoa has become a vital component in the Dolphins' spine, and last week's game showed exactly why. The calm and composed playmaker helped steer his side to a memorable win over a Panthers team that has claimed the premiership for the past four seasons.
Reflecting on his journey so far, Katoa said he entered the preseason with a clear mission: to take ownership of his game and elevate his performance.
"I went into preseason a little disappointed with how I finished last year", Katoa admitted.
"I really wanted to work on my running game and my defence."
And the work he has. Katoa's recent form hasn't gone unnoticed, with back-to-back stand-out performances.
Against the Titans, he led running metres for the Dolphins with 193, while against the Panthers, he continued to impose himself in attack, with smart game management and taking on the defensive line.
"It's been about chasing the footy more. Whether we're up or down, I've been encouraged to back myself and keep attacking," Katoa explained.
"I just want the ball in my hands."
When asked about rising to the occasion against one of the game's most elite playmakers, Katoa acknowledged the size of the occasion coming up against Nathan Cleary.
He also recalled last year's golden-point decider between the two sides, saying this time, the Dolphins were determined to control the little moments.
"We spoke about icing the moments, the small decisions that turn games.
"I knew I had to stay composed, lead from the front, and just play what's in front of me."
He credits his growth to a strong preseason and the trust shown by the Dolphins coaching team.
"Woolfy instils so much confidence in me. I feel like I play my best footy under him. The only way I can repay that trust is by performing."
With back-to-back wins and momentum building, Katoa and the Dolphins have firmly shifted their attention to this Good Friday's home game at Suncorp against the Storm.
The home side will be eager to embrace the challenge of facing this season's premiership favourites, with Katoa once again ready to lead his side when the big moments come.
