Gilbert's community work recognised with Ken Stephen medal nomination

The 2024 Ken Stephen Medal – Man of the Year presented by Westpac is a prestigious award that recognises the genuine contributions an NRL player has made both on the field and in their local community.

The 2024 nominees form the NRL Community Team of the Year, and now it's your chance to vote and have your say on who you think should be an automatic finalist for the Ken Stephen Medal.

The Dolphins' nominee for this year's award is Tom Gilbert.

Tom is an invaluable member of the Dolphins community, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to supporting and uplifting those around him.

His dedication to helping others is nothing short of remarkable. Despite his busy schedule and his own challenges with injuries, he consistently finds time to assist others, embodying the true spirit of community service.

“My motivation stems from a sense of understanding and appreciating the unique and rare opportunity I have. When you begin to realise the capability and influence an NRL player can have in advocating for support, initiative & change.”

What I ultimately want to see is change. Change in things I am passionate about and impact societal problems in a positive light.

Tom is also a proud ambassador for the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital Foundation Giving Day.

With the hospital annually caring for over 600,000 individuals, Tom expresses his support to the RBWH by personally visiting patients at the hospital. Drawing from his own experiences, especially during his rehabilitation from injury and overcoming challenges.

 

Tom's openness and willingness to share his story strengthen the bond between him and the patients, reassuring them that they are not alone in their journey towards recovery.

Additionally, through his connection with St. Patrick's College, Tom volunteers his time to support the Paddy's Van initiative, having initially participated in the program while attending the school.

Tom has a personal commitment to join the Paddy's Van every Monday afternoon when possible, ensuring that hot meals reach those who are vulnerable.

His unwavering advocacy for Paddy's Van has also deeply influenced his teammates. Inspired by his selflessness, Tom has addressed the squad, urging them to join him.

Consequently, several players have expressed interest in contributing to Paddy's Van, while others are exploring additional community opportunities.

Tom’s community contributions extend beyond mere participation; he actively seeks out opportunities to make a difference and does so with a level of grace and humility that is truly commendable.

His actions have consistently reflected his strong values and belief in community power.

The fan vote winner will come away with $2,500 to give back to their Junior Rugby League Club and a Charity, as well as become an automatic finalist for the Ken Stephen Medal – Man of the Year.
