Scans have today confirmed that Tom Gilbert suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture in his right knee in the trial against the Warriors on Saturday.
Gilbert did the non-contact injury in the 44th minute of the match in Auckland.
He will now require surgery and extensive period of rehabilitation to repair the damage.
It comes after Gilbert missed a large portion of last year because of a shoulder reconstruction suffered in the 2023 State of Origin opener.
“Tom is now effectively out for the 2024 season because of this injury, which generally requires a nine to twelve month rehab period,” said Dolphins’ Head of Performance Jeremy Hickmans.
“ On a positive note, he has already shown us how dedicated he is and that he is willing to go to all lengths through a long rehabilitation with his comeback from last year’s shoulder surgery.
“I have no doubt he will replicate those efforts and be back ready to go for the 2025 season.”

Dolphins forward Tom Gilbert has suffered a suspected ACL injury after the Maroons forward was assisted from the field during his side's Pre-Season Challenge loss to the Warriors.
In just his second game back after undergoing a shoulder reconstruction in June last year, Gilbert fell awkwardly without a hand laid on him and was in immediate discomfort as he hit the turf.
Initial tests indicated a suspected ACL tear but Gilbert is set to undergo further testing.
"He's in there pretty disappointed at the moment, obviously just coming back from last year's injury in the Origin," said Dolphins assistant coach Nathan Fien.
"He's a big part of our team and we are just gutted for him at the moment but obviously we just have to wait and see what the scans say.
